Climate action starts on our streets. Across East and South East London, we're turning community gardening, repairing, cooking, and public art into practical action that makes neighbourhoods cleaner, greener, stronger, and safer.
Some of Our Activities:
Rewinding Gardens: Working with community groups to transform neglected outdoor spaces into thriving green areas that support wildlife, improve biodiversity, boost wellbeing, and bring neighbours together.
Managing Waste: Learning practical ways to repair, reuse, compost, reduce food waste, and make sustainable choices that save money while protecting the environment.
Promoting Green Jobs: Helping young people and residents access skills, training, mentoring, and employment opportunities in the growing green economy, creating pathways to sustainable careers.
Public Art: We will create six large murals across East London to raise awareness of environmental issues. Each mural will be the result of a series of workshops and consultations with community groups and schools across different boroughs. Local communities will share their vision for a better environment, and talented artists will transform those ideas into inspiring public artworks.
Citizen Journalism Network: We will train young people in the fundamentals of environmental journalism, equipping them to investigate issues affecting their communities and share their stories through video and social media. Participants will receive certificates recognising their skills, which can support university applications and future employment opportunities.
Thanks to National Lottery players, A Cleaner and Greener East London has received £870,178.95 over three years from The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest community funder in the UK. The project will focus on improving green spaces, waste management, and green economy employability in the urban areas of East and Southeast London. Working particularly with underrepresented communities, it will build climate literacy and help over 7000+ people engage in environmental action through accessible, everyday activities.
The project is led by Paint the Change, working with five partners: Christchurch Primary School, Friends of Chandos Road Garden, Re-Instate Ltd, The Exchange Erith Ltd and Xenia.
This comes from the Climate Action Fund, a long-term commitment to support communities across the UK to act on climate change and involve more people in positive environmental action.
